From Syntax 4 lecture Notice that some of these sentences involve movement. When they were given as practice sentences, that was before we talked about movement so you were not expected to know it of course. Now that you know that auxilaries be and have are generated in V, I’m drawing the correct structures. I’ve included a CP layer in all of these sentences. As we said in class, you should think of every sentence as containing a CP shell which only becomes visible in questions and when embedded. You don’t have to draw a CP shell if it’s not relevant (if it’s a matrix clause that is not a question), but you might as well do it, as I do here. (a) The senator from Illinois has won.
