Inside the Mind of G o o g l e History: Google is the brainchild of Larry Page and Sergei Brin. It started in 1996 as a research project while they were PhD students at Stanford University. Originally intended to be named “BackRub”, but later renamed Google (originating from a misspelling of the word googol , which is a 1 followed by 100 zeroes, representing the large amount of data Google is capable of handling), it originally ran on the Stanford University’s website under google.stanford.edu , until 1997, when the domain google.com was acquired. Page’s original idea was to create a search engine that could query back-links (a “crawler” would cache the web and create a database of websites and their links in order to avoid having to click every link in order to get to different web pages), hence the name “BackRub”. But at the moment Page started to build his crawler, the internet consisted of over 10 million websites and incalculable number of links.
