UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI - COLUMBIA DEPARTMENT OF MECHANICAL AND AEROSPACE ENGINEERING MAE 3800 Instrumentation and Measurements Laboratory Open Ended Design Project Total points: 20 Due: Thursday, May 6 The problem: You are approached by the US Border Patrol to develop a low-cost sensor system that detects persons, potential terrorists or illegal immigrants, hidden in container trucks crossing the US borders. You may work in groups (a maximum of three students in each group) Report format The Lab 7 experiment following this assignment together with other measurement tools you learned in class and in previous lab experiments provide a few solution options for you to consider. Conduct Lab 7 experiment before writing this report. You are required to prepare a technical report addressed to your lab instructor. The report must include the following: 1. (2 pts) A cover page including the project report title, names & ID numbers of the group members and an abstract of the report (less than 50 words). Following each name, place in parenthesis the percent of effort by each team member (leave it blank if the team members cannot come to an agreement). 2. (4 pts) Proposed design of your instrument setup. This should include the block diagrams and narratives explaining how your system works. For example, does the truck have to be parked on the load cell with engines shut down? Does the driver have to get off the truck? 3. (2 pts) Considerations that led to the proposed design. Have you considered other options? What are the pros and cons of the proposed design compared with the alternatives (at least one). 4. (6 pts) Preliminary results showing the feasibility of the proposed design. In this section, you should include: a. Instrument setup including related block diagrams. The block diagrams might be different from the block diagrams in part 2 since there is no truck involved in the preliminary test; b. Equipment settings and parameters: scope settings and virtual instrument settings; c. Test results demonstrating the feasibility of your design. 5.
