Date: October 9, 2007 To: Jeff Scott From: Tyler Mentel Subject: Calibration of a solid state tilt sensor Introduction In this experiment we will evaluate the hysteresis offset of a tilt sensor. We will also obtain a least squares fit to the data in the linear range and use excel to generate tables of our data and graph the results. Procedure We start with a sensor powered by a DC source (6-30 VDC) connected to a single axis tilt sensor, where the voltage is read by a DMM. We then record the measurements of the sensor from -60 degrees to positive 60 degrees in 10 degree increments (indicated by below voltage in table). We then do the same experiment in the opposite direction, or from 60 to -60. The corresponding voltages were recorded as voltage below and voltage above. Hysteresis was calculated by subtracting the voltage below from the voltage above value. The data was then plotted from -20 to 20 degrees and was then fitted with a line of Eq. 1: (1) The voltages were then replaced with the
