#1 The Development of Sociology Developed middle 19 th century - European social observers use scientific methods to test their ideas. Industrial Revolution & political revolutions -America and France led to societal chaos. The development of imperialism As Europeans conquered other nations, they came in contact with different cultures and began to ask why cultures varied The success of the natural sciences, which created a desire to apply scientific methods in order to find answers for the questions being raised about the social world as well. Auguste Comte (1798-1857) Coined the term “sociology Positivism —applying the scientific approach to the social world—but he did not utilize this approach himself m±±± Karl Marx (1818-1883) Founder of class conflict Struggle between the proletariat and the bourgeoisie—was the key to human history. Emile Durkheim (1858-1917) ¨ 9 ²C± Goal - to get sociology recognized as a separate academic discipline. understanding the social factors that influence individual behaviour Studied suicide rates among different groups Social integration - degree to which people are tied to their social group (Social Ties) anomic suicide ¨9 ² tied to capitalism and material wealth (aspirations of wealth unfulfilled) Individualism (too much) = break down of society ³ detachment Prevention ³ creation of groups ³ state and family (belonging) Egoistic - Lack of social ties (industrial societies (freedom) Altruistic - Bonds strong, Example: Losing a loved one Max Weber (1864-1920) 9 ²C± Work ethic to get ahead/maintain usual or traditional way of life (question greed) Defined religion as a central force in social change (i.e., Protestantism encourages greater economic development and was the central factor in the rise of capitalism in some countries).
