Race and Ethnicity Definition of Race Race, a group with inherited physical characteristics that distinguish it from another group, is both a myth and a reality. 1. It is a reality in the sense that humans come in different colours and shapes. 2. It is a myth because there are no pure races; what we call “races” are social classifications, not biological categories. In addition, it is a myth that any one race is superior to another. 3. The myth makes a difference for social life because people believe these ideas are real and they act on their beliefs. II. Definition of ethnicity and ethnic groups III. Ethnic and ethnicity refer to a group of people who identify with one another on the basis of common ancestry and cultural heritage. Definition of minority groups A minority group is defined as one group, singled out for unequal treatment by members of the dominant group, and that regards itself as the object of collective discrimination. Both race and ethnicity can be a basis for unequal treatment
