Name: Robbie Grove Partners: N.A. Date: 9/30/10 TA: Feng Liu CHEM 53 Experiment 1: Series of Copper Reactions Data Sheet and Discussion Questions Data and Observations: Procedural Step Reaction Observations (Evidence of Reaction Claim) Step 1: added nitric acid Cu(s)+ 4HNO 3 (aq) Cu(NO 3 ) 2 (aq) + 2H 2 O(l)+  2NO 2 (g ) - Solution turns green, then dark blue,  which is indicative of a chemical  reaction occuring -Brown gas NO2 gas evolved from  solution    Step 2: added water Cu(NO 3 ) 2 (aq) + 6H 2 O(l)  Cu(H 2 O) 2+  (aq) +  2NO 3  -  (aq) - The solution turns a lighter blue  (indicates the possible hydration of  Cu(H 2 O) 2+   ) Step 3: added NaOH Cu(H 2 O) 2+  (aq) + 2NaOH (aq)  Cu(OH) 2  (s)  +6H 2 O(l) -Bluish clumpy precipitate forms immediately ( Cu(OH) ) Step 4: heat  Cu(OH) 2 (s) + heat   CuO(s) + H 2 O(l) -Black precipitate forms (CuO) - Once settled, a clear supernatant forms at the surface w the precipitate settling at the bottom (evidence for H 2 O)  Step 5: added sulfuric acid CuO (s) + H 2 SO (aq)  CuSO 4 (aq) + H 2 O(l) -No precipitate in the solution -Solution turns aqua blue immediately (evidence for the formation of CuSO 4 ) Step 6: added zinc (two reactions occur) CuSO 4
