The fact that you have enrolled in this class, offered by a public university, is a result of a political process. One of the goals of this course is to provide you with a better understanding of political processes. This course will provide an examination of both the United States and Texas systems of governance, focusing specifically on their institutions and practices. The course’s basic premise is that being governed under a representative democracy provides citizens with a responsibility to educate themselves on their system of government—to become educated consumers if you will. As a step in that direction, this course will look specifically at the function and structure of the legislative, executive, bureaucratic, and judicial branches of government in the United States and Texas. Also included in the course is a brief examination of some public policy issues such as foreign policy, social policy, and economics. Outcomes and Assessment In completing this course, students will: 1. Explore the institutional role of the legislative branch at both the state and federal levels. ASSESSMENT: Exam 1. 2. Examine the institutional role of the executive branch, including the bureaucracy, at both the state and federal levels. ASSESSMENT: Exam 2 and Exam 3. 3.
