Where do they occur besides fraternities or sororities?  Gangs, tribal societies, religion, military, police  What is the benefit of these rituals?  How can you use or defend against the extra effort principle? Cognitive Dissonance Theory  Cognitive dissonance distressing mental state caused by inconsistency between a persons two beliefs or a belief and an action  Central premise : humans have a drive to avoid cognitive inconsistency and Cognitive Dissonance Theory  Attitude objects can have 3 possible relationships: They can be consonant (in harmony) They can be dissonant (in disharmony) They can have no relationship Cognitive Dissonance  As the magnitude of dissonance increases, so does the pressure to reduce it.  Factors influencing the magnitude of dissonance: The relative proportion of consonant & dissonant elements. The importance of elements or issues. Dilemmas to Cause Dissonance  For someone you loved deeply, would you move to a far away country with little chance of seeing your family again?  You discover your wonderful one-year old child is, because of a mix-up at the hospital, not yours. Would you want to exchange the child to try to correct the mistake?...
