Aleksandra Rozenberg 11/23/10 psych 1 Post Extra Credit: Ted video 1. I watched a ted video; the speaker was Matthieu Ricard on the habits of happiness. His 20 min presentation was about happiness (aka well being) and about quality of life. He himself is bimolecular scientist from France, and he is Buddhist. He believes that we are able to train our minds to be in a state of happiness all the time. He calls this pure awareness and that being able to train our minds is a cognitive ability. He concludes his presentation by saying that we need to look inward to be able to go through a mind transformation – this is done through meditation. He explained that when someone is in a state of meditation, MRI show brain activity that corresponds with compassion and happiness. 2. In class we learned from chp 5: variations of consciousness that meditation helps heighten awareness and brings mental processes under greater control. It’s an exercise of mental self-disciplines.
