Cultural Anthropology Due on Tuesday, June 22, 2010 Email to [email protected] Short Essay Assignment:  Cultural Relativism Content: Cultural Relativism is a point of view Anthropologists use to understand other cultures in  terms of what is proper behavior from the perspective of the community in which the  behavior occurs. Your assignment is to write a short essay demonstrating that you  understand this concept. How would you apply cultural relativism to understand cultural practices that are  different from your own?  Briefly research two different instances  of cultural practices  somewhere in the world outside of your own culture (eating strange foods, body art or  piercings, child labor, cousin marriage, etc.) that you feel are unusual by your  standards.  Contrast cultural relativism with ethnocentrism as two different approaches  to understanding these practices within their original cultural context.
