Anth 130: Cultural Anthropology: Test #1 Prep (Chapters 1 – 3) This Study Guide is for your information only. It is not a homework assignment and it does not have to be turned in. Look over your chapter notes and video notes, and pay special attention to the ethnic examples and original studies in your textbook. Test #1 questions will cover these subjects, plus vocabulary and other highlights from lectures, textbook and handouts. There will be 30 questions on this test. All questions will be multiple choice or true/false. The test will be found by clicking on the “Tests” icon when the tests are released (check your syllabus for dates and times). 1) Anthropology is the study of __________ … (be specific) 2) What are the four subfields of Anthropology and how are they related to each other? 3) What is Participant Observation? Understand the concepts of subculture, ethnic group and pluralistic societies 7) Differentiate between Society and Culture; differentiate between Sex and Gender 8) Explain the difference between Ethnocentrism and Cultural Relativism 9) What does the example of the Kapauku illustrate about the interdependence of cultural structures? 10) How are the five primary functions of Culture incorporated into Malinowski’s “fundamental levels of need”? 11) Understand the basic history of ethnographic research as its focus has changed over time. 12) Understand how ethnographers gather their evidence: from what sources? What are “key consultants/informants”? Understand the difference between quantitative data and qualitative data (“hard” data vs. “soft” data). 13) What are some of the problems in doing ethnographic fieldwork? 14) What was Malinowski’s 3-fold plan to gather anthropological data? Explain how this approach leads to recording objective rather than subjective information. 15) What did Weiner find out about Trobriand women?
