Page 1 of 2 FMG Video #39458 – Africa Calling – An Appeal for Understanding The two forces in a tug-of-war with each other, as Africa attempts to progress – Tradition and  Modernity Number of African children with AIDS, compared to the number of kids world-wide who have AIDS – 600,000 children worldwide have AIDS, 550,000 are African Orphans in Africa who have AIDS…how did they lose their parents? – Most died of AIDS What percentage of the work to be done in Africa is seen as the responsibility of the women? – 80%  of the work is seen as the women’s responsibility African saying about the crucial role women play in African society – “If women in Africa should  slip and fall, Africa would fall apart.” Prevalence of arranged marriages in Africa In most parts, arranged marriages are the  norm though many women challenge these practices. Men often acquire a second  wife to meet their sexual needs.  Women’s views on marriage and their role in it many challenge the normal tradition of  arranged marriages. The father of the girl in Ethiopia who ran away from the  arranged marriage refused to let her come back home, and thinks his daughter is an
