HANDLING QUOTATIONS IN HUMANITIES AND LITERATURE ESSAYS For Students of Patricia Clark ~ Seneca College ~ In addition to reading this page, please consult the Seneca guidelines for integrating quotations in your term papers. In humanities and literature research papers, you will frequently quote from primary sources or from the works of critics or historians. In doing so, you both demonstrate the point you are making and share with your readers the flavour of the language used by the author or critic. To integrate your chosen quotations smoothly into the text of your essays, you need to keep certain guidelines in mind. To begin, quote only those words, phrases, or lines that are particularly apt and interesting in the context of your essay. As well, be sure to render the quotation exactly, so as not to misrepresent the writer. I. CLARIFY THE CONTEXT OF QUOTATIONS In quoting from a primary source, be sure the author, work, and context of the passage are clear. Briefly clarifying the context makes your quotation meaningful to the reader and often reduces the length of the quotation. WEAK: The clan doesn't always approve of Okonkwo's actions: "The evil you have done can ruin the whole clan" (22). BETTER: The clan doesn't always approve of Okonkwo's actions. When Okonkwo breaks the peace during the Week of Peace, Ezeani, the priest of the earth goddess, admonishes him, saying, "The evil you have done can ruin the whole clan" (22). In quoting from a secondary source, use the critic's name. You will thus allow your readers to
