10/6/2010 ME200 Therm I Lecture 18, Prof. Mongia 2 A reaction steam turbine described by by Hero of Alexandria in Roman Egypt in 1 st century. 1 st impact steam turbine invented by Taqi al-Din in Ottoman Egypt in 1551 . Similar devices invented by Italian Giovanni Branca in 1629 , John Wilkins in 1648 and Samuel Pepys in 1660. Modern steam turbine was invented in 1884 by the Englishman Sir Charles Parsons .
