Rudolf Diesel (1858 - 1913) Fascinated by 2 nd Law & Carnot cycle (Frenchman Sadi Carnot (1796 - 1832). No wonder Diesel cycle is the best cycle. 1892: Applied for patent. 1893: 1 st prototype built. 1897: 3 rd prototype successful in proving theory works. Ran into patent dispute . Could not do any thing until 1908 when the patent ran out. Poor and disheartned, died in 1913. First diesel engine that worked, 1897.
