The Legalization of Marijuana Even though it is considered a drug, legalizing marijuana can bring country extra tax revenue and more jobs in the marijuana industry acting as a stimulus package. Following, some research on the pros of legalizing marijuana and I came across some very interesting information that could help our country at this time of need. Driven by a Drug War, the United States prison population is about six to 10 as high as most of the Western European nations. The United States is close second to Russia in the rate of incarceration per 100,000 people. In the year 2000, mare than 734,000 people were arrested in the Unites States for Marijuana-related offenses alone. The United States places a great emphasis on arresting people for smoking marijuana. Nearly 5.9 million Americans have been arrested for marijuana, this is a greater number then the entire population of North Dakota, South Dakota, Montana, District of Columbia, Alaska, Delaware, Vermont ,and Wyoming Combined( www.legalizationofmarijuana.com ). American taxpayers are now spending more than a billion dollars per year to incarcerate its citizens for pot. That is according to statistics recently released by the United States. Department of Justice's Bureau of Justice Statistics.

Are they aware of the much needed extra revenue and jobs legalizing marijuana can provide for our country? A study by Jeffery Miron , a professor at Harvard (2009), said that legalizing marijuana would save the government $7.7 billion a year. Second, legalized marijuana would bring in a large amount of tax revenue. Miron estimated that it would bring in $6.2 billion if it were taxed at the rates of alcohol and tobacco. Right now many states including the one I live in, Tennessee, are developing huge budget shortfalls because of the recession. These states have been forced to cut jobs and hours. Some states, like California, are in huge trouble. They are shutting down the government for two days a month now to save money. That means fewer hours for the workers, and inconvenience for everyone in the state. Jeffery Miron (2009) estimates that legalizing marijuana would save $7.7 billion dollars a year by reducing the enforcement and incarceration costs. Legalizing marijuana would allow us to use our police force in ways to a great extent more helpful to the general population than trying to put Michael Phelps in jail. This budget savings would allow many jobs to be saved around the country. Therefore, let us keep in mind the enourmous potential for the taxation of marijuana. According to recent research, it is predictable that marijuana is the cash crop in the state of California with yearly revenues approaching $14 billion in California alone. Let us just say the United States charges just a 10% tax on marijuana, which would yield $1.4 billion in the state of California alone.
