Some Terminology Job Satisfaction – pleasure and feelings of accomplishment employees derive from performing their job well. The above is an interesting “definition” as the accepted JS construct is based upon environmental factors (satisfaction with boss, work, co-workers etc.) Motivation – set of forces that cause people to behave in certain ways Turnover – Quit + Dismissal rate

Frederick Winslow Taylor (1856-1915) Founder of Scientific Management Also known as “Taylorism” Workers naturally work at the slowest rate that goes unpunished – “Soldiering” pure Taylorism views workers simply as machines, to be made efficient by removing unnecessary or wasted effort. Based upon the division of labour and time & motion studies Clearly defined roles of Managers and Workers. Managers direct and workers do as instructed. Taylorism preached efficiency as the greatest virtue. Efficiency led to more production – which was to reward “Taylorism” highly influential in both Capitalist & Communist countries Classical Management
