Psychology 8/26/08 Chapter 2 Notes Research Methods in Psychology Important to study Psychology Scientifically Can’t rely on “common sense”, anecdotal evidence Hindsight bias- the tendency to believe, after learning to outcome, that one would have foreseen it. EX- 9/11- plane hitting first tower and those in the 2 nd tower not evacuating because they didn’t know it was coming due to people thinking the first plane hitting was an accident. Anecdotal evidence: o Can’t assume one person’s experience applies to everyone o EX: listening to others experience about their past professor o Can’t assume that anecdote is accurate o EX: Failed the course so therefore they say the class was terrible o Also, people estimate time that could be off. Depends on time frame. Steps of the Scientific Method 1. Prediction: formulate a hypothesis a. Hypothesis: a tentative statement about the relationship between two variables i. Variables: any measurable conditions, events, characteristics, or behaviors that are controlled or observed in a study. b. Theory: a system of interrelated ideas used to explain observations i. Organizes observations and ideas about a particular topic ii. Can be used to explain and predict behavior iii. Must be testable, falsifiable, and have evidence to support it to be a good theory. iv. EX: Child Development. Different observations pulled into one theory v. EX: Freud-theory that is not the best. Can’t test his theory of unconscious mind, not falsifiable, and cant support it because we can’t “go” there. c.
