Any circumstances that threaten your well-being or tax your resources Four main categories 4 Categories of stress Frustration: occurs when pursuit of a goal is thwarted o You want something but you can’t have it o Minor: you wanted a Coke but all they have is Pepsi o Major: want kids but you’re infertile Conflict: occurs when you have two or more incompatible needs or motives o A choice is required o Levels of internal conflict are positively correlated with anxiety, depression, physical symptoms o 3 types: Approach-approach: choosing between desirable goals Tv or playing game cube (her son) for 1 hr a day Avoidance-avoidance: choosing between undesirable goals Ex: class at 7am or next semester and get behind on graduating Approach-avoidance: strong desire to approach and avoid the same goal Moving back and forth between options Change: noticeable alterations in your living circumstances that require
