8/20/08 CHAPTER 1 THE EVOLUTION OF PSYCHOLOGY Gambling- 5-6% of teens and young adults develop serious problems with gambling. This is 2-4 times the rate of older adults. Psychology is about understanding all the things we do. It means the study of the mind. The word psychology comes from two Greek words- psyche, meaning the soul, and logos, referring to the study of a subject. A NEW SCIENCE IS BORN “intellectual parents” were the disciplines of philosophy and physiology. Wilhelm Wundt (1832-1920)- changed the view of psychology. Made it an independent discipline rather than a stepchild of philosophy and physiology. 1879-psychology’s date of birth. Born in Germany but became very popular in North America. Wundt generated 54000 pages of books and articles in his career. THE BATTLE OF THE “SCHOOLS” BEGINS: STRUCTURALISM VS. FUNCTIONALISM Structuralism came from the leadership of Edward Titchener, an Englishman who immigrated to the US in 1892 and taught for decades at Cornell University. He learned under Wundt, but
