Need to look again at how our country varies with others around the world. • Alexis de Tocqueville-first to write and say that America is exceptional. He is a French aristocrat who came to US in 1830s to see how our democracy worked while theirs did not. • America=Outlier • Double edged concept-we are the worst, and the best, depending on the quality addressed • US starts off being exceptional because it’s the first colony to become independent besides Iceland. • American Creed: Liberty, Egalitarianism (equality of opportunity and respect), Individualism, Populism, & Laissez- hire. They represent the absence of feudal structures— monarchies & aristocracies. It fosters a high sense of personal responsibility, independent initiative, and voluntarism....
