Katelyn Fish 6/9/09 Assignment 1 Two different types of bosses characterized the end of the 19th century and the early 20th century work: the sincere, caring natured, and the power-driven males. In these two documents, “Labor Contractors and Italian Immigrants” and “George Washington Plunkitt Explains Politics,” the extreme to both bosses is represented. In “Labor Contractors and Italian Immigrants,” the power-driven males lead their laborers to starvation and slavery. Whereas, in the “George Washington Plunkitt Explains Politics” Plunkitt treats his laborers with respect and legitimacy. These two types of bosses are what define the argument of the emerging 20 th century: how are laborers to be treated? Nearing the end of the 19 th century, Italian immigrants are broke and looking for any job they come by. Upon entering the American work force these laborers verbally agree to contracts with their boss. A government is born at the will of each contractor; “He often keeps guards armed with Winchester rifles to prevent his men from running
