Psychologists-investigate questions about human behavior, formulate precise questions about behavior. Psychology comes from two Greek words: psyche(soul) logos(study);literal meaning-study of mind Psychology is the “birth child” of philosophy and physiology 1879-birth of Psychology Scientific study Page 5 Structuralism: based on the notion that the task of psychology is to analyze consciousness into its basic elements and investigate how these elements are related. Structuralists were concerned with sensation and perception in vision, hearing and touch. Introspection(method used by structuralists)-careful, systematic self- observation of one’s own conscious experience Functionalism: based on the belief that psychology should investigate the function or purpose of consciousness, rather than its structure.
