Taylor Rawson Sanchez Pols1101 26 August 2009 Land of the Free Democracy is generally defined as a government run by the people, but to me democracy is so much more than that. It is the freedom of the people to possess liberties capable of shaping a country’s society. Measuring democracy in America today should not be compared to other countries or to other time periods in history because America’s democracy is like no other democracy. America’s democracy focuses on the present and looks to improve what is already in motion. To simply say that our democracy is good enough when comparing with the governments of other nations is preposterous. There is always some tweaking that can be done to improve the system. I think we should measure our democracy based on the voter turnout rate in both national and local elections, and also on the American citizens’ approval of the president and elected officials. If there are large voter turnouts, then that is when we know that America is succeeding because it shows that people are becoming interested in voicing their opinion by
