ECE 299, Spring ‘10, Stiff-Roberts Page 2 January 15, 2010 • Free-space transmission of light is the basis of many optical systems. • A different approach for transmitting light that uses dielectric conduits is known as guided wave optics. • Guided wave optics Provides long-distance light transmission (100-1000 km in long- distance fiber optic transmission) Directs light to locations that could be awkward to reach using free- space optics (10-100 μm transmission in integrated optics) Enables miniaturized optical and optoelectronic devices requiring confinement of light (optical confinement in semiconductor lasers) Establishes secure communication Introduction to Guided Wave Optics

ECE 299, Spring ‘10, Stiff-Roberts Page 3 January 15, 2010 • The concept of optical confinement is based on embedding a material with a higher refractive index within a material of lower refractive index such that light is trapped due to total internal reflection at the material boundaries. • Such optical confinement is used to make waveguides, which can have different geometries.
