Inbar Vanek LALS 80H , Arredondo April 27, 2010 SECTION I #2 The Selfish Allies The relationship between the United States with Cuba, Mexico, and Puerto Rico throughout the 19 th and 20 th is each respectively unique, but yet similar. Throughout the years, the relationship of these Latin American countries to the United States came with new opportunities and seemed to benefit both sides—from enhancing each other’s economical status to political achievements. However, these opportunities gradually led and revealed distinct struggles among these three countries, as well as to the people in them and those who migrated to the United States. Therefore, even though it seems as if the relationship between United States with Cuba, Mexico, and Puerto Rico is mutual, looking deeper, shows a very one sided benefit towards the U.S. Cuba’s proximity to North America established economic prosperity and stability through trade, mainly of sugar, which assisted in Cuba’s development. Cuba’s desire and growing trade labor led Cubans to arrive to the U.S. with a warm welcome, where they received an education opportunity and thereafter returned with enhanced U.S. influence, “Americanizing” Cuba. Circular migrations occurred from the island to the U.S. (at least until the rise of Castro). This also benefited the United States—now working with skilled “Americanized” laborers and at the same time increasing their economical stability. Politically, Cuba’s independence from Spain succeeded with the help of North America
