Murmann 2 Overview Reading – 4.4.3 (Temperature Insensitive Biasing) Introduction – In this lecture we will introduce the basic idea behind the frequently used "bandgap" voltage reference. Conceptually, a bandgap reference simply combines two quantities with opposite temperature behavior to generate a voltage with (approximately) zero TC.

Murmann 3 Key Idea kT/q has a positive temperature coefficient – "PTAT" proportional to absolute temperature •V BE of a BJT decreases with temperature – "CTAT" complementary to absolute temperature Can combine PTAT + CTAT to yield an approximately zero TC voltage reference – Useful in circuits that require a stable reference voltage • E.g. A/D converters
