Properties of oxygen Oxygen supports life ü Oxygen is essential for humans -Its normal concentration in the air we breathe is approximately 21 % -We can breathe a 50-60% oxygen enriched atmosphere for several hours under medical care (oxygen therapy). Ø But it is dangerous to do so without knowing the associated risks of oxygen toxicity ! Premature babies – oxygen and light causes blindness high bilirubin (skin is yellow); therapy is ultraviolet light if you don’t cover the eyes, the proteins in eyes crosslink and so blindness

Oxygen: a very dangerous drug that probably should be banned Oxygen, is a very toxic gas and an extreme fire hazard. Exposure to 100% oxygen kills people within hours. At 20% oxygen, the toxic effect is delayed and it may take 70 to 80 years before death occurs. Oxygen contributes to a complex process called aging. Oxygen is habit forming and inhalation (at birth) makes oxygen addiction permanent. Oxygen is an extreme fire hazard. Almost all of the fires on this planet were due to this gas. If oxygen were ‘invented’ today, the Government would ban it immediately (even the Republicans!)

6 CO2 + 12 H2O + photons → C6H12O6 + 6 O2 + 6 H2O carbon dioxide + water + light energy → glucose + oxygen + water Oxygen is the Waste Product of Photosynthesis Where did Oxygen come from, and why is it so dangerous? - Oxygen came from photosynthesis, and it is dangerous because it is a strong oxidant
