CS3283 Distributed System Assignment Two 2 | P a g e Abstract Real-time systems are getting more and more popularity, with the extensive use of demanding and advanced distributed media services through the Internet. There are three major degrees of requirements for these services, called soft, hard and firm real-time. This report focus on four central technical issues when designing real-time systems for distributed multimedia services. Examples are used throughout the report to conclude that requirements to multimedia services are higher today than they was yesterday, that the higher the requirements the higher the consequences of violations of these, that higher video compression lowers the video size but make the frames packet pattern become uneven, thus creating bursty traffic. That there are advantages by choosing P2P as system architecture and that playing two videos is a demanding task for a single processor system.
