Example : Find the capacitance of a parallel-plate capacitor containing two dielectrics, with 1 1.5 r ε = and 2 3.5 r = . Assume that dielectric comprises half the volume (figure below), and that 2 2 Am = , 3 10 dm = . Solution : Since the two dielectrics each comprise half the volume of the capacitor (as shown in the figure), we may view this capacitor as consisting of two capacitors (with area 2 A and separation d ) in parallel. The first capacitor is a parallel plate capacitor, with 1 1.5 r = between the plates, resulting in a capacitance
