Biological Sciences 101 Dr. Mark Sanders Solving Genetics Problems One of the difficult transitions from lower division to upper division biological science classes is the requirement that you learn to solve problems that involve the assessment and interpretation of data. Whereas the problems you worked in lower division classes frequently relied on memorizing information, memorization is of little utility in solving genetics problems. Learning and remembering vocabulary is certainly important, but there are very few genetics problems for which memorization is a successful problem-solving strategy. So how do you solve genetics problems? The answer is that it takes commitment, practice and an effective problem solving strategy – and I have just such a successful strategy for you to follow. Successful problem solving is the key to learning the information you need from this course.
