The war film works on many levels: it titillates the viewer with its battle scenes, invokes emotions, and didactically indoctrinates. Also, the war film can rewrite history. 2. To instill a patriotic sense of duty and pride in the viewer, Hollywood shows us that the good guys need to kill the bad guys in order to protect our freedom and democracy in the world. 3. Coming Home (1978) looks at the effects of a senseless war on one of our “good boys,” a gung ho soldier returns home a paraplegic and falls in love wit h his nurse. Taxi Driver (1976) is a postmodern look at one returning veteran who distrusts authority and yet believes in the values of our society. Hearts and Minds (1975) is the only film of its kind to critically examine the doctrine of war. Firefox (1982) rehashes the old anti-communist themes of the Cold War culture.
