Brennan Feb. 27, 2008 Literature Response Sheet Title: “ Harrison Bergeron” Author: Kurt Vonnegut Symbols : the society in this story is a symbol of egalitarianism Theme: Equality and individuality should exist simultaneously. Response: I learned the belief that everyone in the world should be equal no matter of the race, color and sex one is when I started my school year. It is part of a perfect society all people desire to have. In the U.S. history, many brave and well-known historic figures fought for this ideal. For example, Dr. King led African-Americans in their pursuit of equality; Susan B. Anthony played a pivotal role in the 19th century women's rights movement. Therefore, we all believe that equality is a basic foundation for a democratic society. Ironically, in the short story “Harrison Bergeron”, Mr. Vonnegut depicts that the Unites States would become an egalitarian country in the year of 2081.
