BIS 104-001 Regulation of Cell Function Syllabus Winter 2011 Lectures : MWF 9:00-9:50 AM, Giedt 1001 Professor: Daniel Starr Email: dastarr@ucdavis.edu Office hours: Mondays 4:10-5:00 pm in SLB3061 (starting Jan 10) Thursdays 2:10-3:00 pm in SLB3061 (starting Jan 6) Teaching Assistant : Yu-Tai Chang (Cell and Developmental Biology Graduate Student) Email: ytchang@ucdavis.edu Office hours: Tuesdays 11:00-11:50 am in SLB 3061 (starting Jan 11) Wednesdays 10:00-10:50 pm in SLB 2061 (starting Jan 5) Course Description: BIS 104 is the capstone of the BIS 101-104 upper level core that all Biological Sciences majors take. We will explore a variety of sub-cellular processes, focusing at the molecular level using genetic and biochemical approaches learned in other courses. Topics focus on membrane structure and function, protein trafficking between organelles, interactions between the cell and its environment, regulation of the cytoskeleton, the cell cycle, and intracellular signaling. Examples of cellular processes will mostly be from animal cells, but we will also explore cell biology of microorganisms and plants. Experimental approaches to uncover the molecular mechanisms will be stressed. Importantly, we will relate how the studied processes relate to human disease, including cancer, immune function, and bacterial infection. Goals of the Course: 1. To become better and more well rounded biologists by understanding how molecular machines function to regulate cellular processes. 2. To use the experimental approaches learned in genetics and biochemistry to understand how to dissect molecular and cellular pathways and regulatory mechanisms. 3. To appreciate the contributions of model systems, such as bacteria, yeast, flies, worms, mice, plants, and tissue culture cells, to our understanding of cellular processes important for health, agriculture, and industry. 4. To appreciate how defects in many cellular processes lead to diseases, including cancer, and how various pharmaceuticals target cellular processes. 5. To become better citizens by understanding the promises and limitations of research in cell biology. Textbook : Cell and Molecular Biology, Gerald Karp, sixth edition. Clickers: You also need to buy a classroom response remote control (a “clicker”). We are using the Interwrite PRS remote unit available at the bookstore. Please bring the clicker to the first and every class. See more on Clickers below. Problem Sets : There will be four problem sets assigned throughout the quarter. They should be completed by 1/12, 1/28, 2/18, and 2/28. Problem sets will not be collected, but I expect that they will be done in a timely manner. Some questions on the exam will come from the problem set. You are welcome to discuss the problem set with others in the class or during office hours. They are designed to help you learn the material.
