Chapter 7 20/03/2009 22:13:00 -Relationship between stress, anxiety, and  dissociation : the disruption of the normally integrated mental processed  involved in memory, consciousness, identity, or perception  -Case Study: Sexual Assault and Stephanie’s PTSD:  Talked to a man about a fire, found him in her apt, attacked and sexually assaulted Saved herself from being raped, but emotional fall out Couldn’t control recurrent terror of PTSD Acute and Posttraumatic Stress Disorders:  Traumatic   stress : so catastrophic and horrifying that they can cause serious psychological harm; an  event that involves actual of threatened death or serious injury to self or others and creates serious  injury to self or others and creates intense feelings of fear, helplessness, or horror Acute   Stress   Disorder  (ASD): w/in 4 weeks after exposure to traumatic stress and is characterized by  dissociative symptoms, reexperiencing of the event, avoidance of reminders of the trauma, and marked  anxiety of arousal Posttraumatic   stress   disorder : symptoms of reexperiencing, avoidance, and arousal, but symptoms  either are longer lasting or have a delayed onset  Symptoms: o Reexperiencing:  flashbacks : sudden memories during which the trauma is replayed in images  or thoughts  o Avoidance: marked or persistent avoidance of stimuli associated with trauma; numbing of  responsiveness o Arousal or Anxiety: exaggerated startle response  o Dissociative: less aware of surroundings, depersonalization—feeling cut off from themselves or  their environment; derealization: marked sense of unreality about yourself or the world around  you; dissociate amnesia—inability to recall important aspects of traumatic experience Comorbidity:  Depression, other anxiety disorders, and substance abuse  -Two-Factor Theory: classical conditioning creates fears when the terror inherent to trauma is paired with the
