RM BOX Study Guide: Analogue studies : focus on behaviors that resemble mental disorders—or isolated features of mental disorders that appear in the natural environment; use b/c it is unethical to induce symptoms of diseases on a patient What determines value? The extent to which the analogue condition is similar to the actual clinical disorder Advantages: they can employ an experimental procedure; investigator can draw strong inferences about cause and effect Dis: involves the extent to which the results of a particular investigation can be generalized to situations outside of the lab; questions about etiology of disorders like depression will probably depend on converging evidence generated from the use of many different research designs Longitudinal study : involves studying people repeatedly over time; hard because lose subjects Cross sectional study : people are studied at only one time point Prospective design (follow-forward design): supposed causes are assessed in the present and subjects are the followed longitudinally to see if hypothesized effects develop over time
