Kelsey Berg MAT 151 Topic 2 DQ 1 Data may be displayed in a wide variety of forms. Choose several methods of data display discussed in the text and describe the advantages and disadvantages of each. How would you teach students about displaying data? Pictographs are used to represent tallies of categories and are often found in newspapers and magazines. A pictograph using a symbol or icon to represent the quantity of items and they are frequently used to show comparisons. However, pictographs can be conflicting as they may contain partial icons which creates a barrier when finding exact information. Dot plots, also known as line plots provide a quick, simple way of organizing data. Dot plots are effective data collection tools when collecting data when there is only one group of data with fewer than 50 values. Stem and leaf plots are similar to a dot plot; however, the scale is vertical rather than horizontal and digits are used in places of x’s. Advantages of a stem and leaf plots are that they can be created by hand easily and they do not become cluttered when the number values increase.
