Sasha Wang SAC 366 Television Genres Candace Moore 12/12/10 Week 13 Questions After reading Lucas Hilderbrand’s article, “ Youtube: Where Cultural Memory and Copyright Converge,” it is easy to see how YouTube offers television viewers a public communicative means of reflection, reproduction, and editing of television content as well as production of non-TV or homemade YouTube material. Hilderbrand quotes a market analyst who said in the New York Times , “YouTube figured out what Google and Yahoo and Microsoft and all the others in the marketplace didn’t,’ she said. ‘It’s not about the video. It’s about creating a community around the video.’” Hilderbrand also comments on how this “community” offers individuals self-promotion. Anybody can be a part of YouTube, which is what makes it an even bigger cultural forum than television. While a divided community of producers and consumers constructs television genres, a community in which everyone is a producer and everyone is a consumer creates
