And as I indicated in class, you should think about how these ideas may apply across all screenings from week 9 through 14. 1. What does the term hegemony imply? How does the idea of paricinema represent the idea of hegemonic struggle? Hegemony- one class comes to lead another class of people • Analysis of social power • “I control you, but you determine the direction of leadership” • It is unstable though because it is voluntary • Leaders must lead in accordance to the masses Antonio Gramsci (Italian) • Theorized about how society has maintained control over disparate social groups • Hegemony- social groups come into control, submitting to a higher authority o Account for tension between structuralism and culturalism o Leading, shepherding another class of people o Hegemony, Leadership is inherently unstable o Has to be won, negotiated, and sustained over a period of time o How is the right to rule constantly renegotiated? How does trash cinema constitute a form of counter-cinema? • Excess- elements that lack a clear motivation and which appear to occur outside of the structural homogeneity (does not mean excess has no relationship to the rest of the film) • Moments when the diegetic world of the film is shattered by the reality of the production value • Excess is utilized in ways that are politically subversive • Beyond the Valley of the dolls o Excess satirizes Hollywood cinema, ON PURPOSE o Continuity editing Cuts happen too frequently Too much seamlessness...
