GVPT484 November 18, 2010 The Politics of Aid and Debt in Africa U.S. Aid to Africa Mainly channeled through the US Agency for International Development The USAID provides assistance to 47 countries in Africa USAID operated 23 bilateral missions on the continent USAID’s overall goal, through it’s aid program, is to strengthen institutional capacity, and to assist Africa establish stable and secure development programs The Focus Points of US Aid Institutional Reforms o Strengthen Africa’s democratic institutions o Professionalize Africa’s security forces o Promote key reforms – economic, fiscal, public, private sector, etc Human Capital Investment o The President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) provides financial assistance to African countries that are the most challenged by HIV/AIDS pandemic o The President’s Malaria Initiative is aimed to reduce mortality by hald in target countries o The Africa Education Initiative aims to increase access to quality
