Lecture 5 Looking at Computers: Understanding the Parts Your Computer’s Hardware Hardware::the parts you can actually touch System Unit::the box that contains the central electronic components of the computer Peripheral devices::those devices such as monitors and printers that are connected to the computer These two together enable the computer to input, process, output, and store Input Devices Input device::enables you to enter data and instructions into the computer Keyboard, mouse, microphones, scanners, digital cameras, graphics tablets Keyboards Aren’t all keyboards the same? OWERTY keyboard was original keyboard, but now the Dvorak keyboard is the alternative How can I use my keyboard most efficiently? Learn the numeric keypad, function keys (F1), control/alt key, windows key, cursor control keys, toggle key (ins) Are keyboards different on notebooks (laptops?) They need to be more compact and have less standard keys, but have more double function keys What about keyboards for PDAs and Tablet PCs? Use a stylus (pen shaped) on the screen, but most have a built in one that you can use the stylus or you can buy an add on keyboard Are there wireless keyboards? Yes, they run off of batteries and use infrared light signals or radio frequency signals
