SOCIAL PROBLEM OF ALCOHOL ABUSE THE USE AND MISUSE OF ALCOHOL ACCOUNT FOR 3.3 MILLION DEATHS EVERY YEAR. THAT MEANS THAT ALCOHOL IS RESPONSIBLE FOR 6% OF ALL DEATHS WORLDWIDE. THE EFFECTS OF ALCOHOL ABUSE ISN’T JUST ON THE INDIVIDUAL CONSUMING. OF COURSE THE HEALTH RISKS AND MORTALITY FOR THE INDIVIDUAL ARE AT GREATER RISK BUT THE RIPPLE EFFECT EXTENDS TO THE PERSONS FAMILY, WORK, AND SOCIETY AS WELL.
WHAT IS ALCOHOL ABUSE? ALCOHOL ABUSE CAN BE DESCRIBED AS DRINKING ALCOHOL IN EXCESS, EITHER ON INDIVIDUAL OCCASIONS DEFINED AS “BINGE DRINKING” OR ON A DAILY BASIS. FOR INDIVIDUALS SUCH AS CHILDREN OR PREGNANT WOMEN ANY AMOUNT OF ALCOHOL CONSUMPTION MAY BE CONSIDERED ALCOHOL ABUSE. HEAVY ALCOHOL CONSUMPTION CAN LEAD TO BOTH PHYSICAL AND MENTAL DAMAGE AS WELL AS DEATH.
ALCOHOL ABUSE: BY THE NUMBERS ALCOHOL CONSUMPTION VARIES BETWEEN MALE AND FEMALE AS WELL AS ETHNICITY OR RACE GENDER STATISTICS MEN ARE MORE LIKELY TO DRINK ALCOHOL THAN WOMEN. 56.5% VS 47.9% MEN ARE ALMOST TWO TIMES MORE LIKELY TO BINGE DRINK THAN WOMEN. 30.4% VS 16% RACIAL/ETHNICITY STATISTICS RACE/ETHNICITY MOST LIKELY TO USE ALCOHOL: CAUCASIANS 57.4% RACE/ETHNICITY MOST LIKELY TO BINGE DRINK: AMERICAN INDIAN/ALASKA NATIVES 30.2% THOSE WHO COME FROM A MORE ADVANTAGED SOCIAL ECONOMICAL BACK ROUND ARE MORE LIKELY TO DRINK ON A REGULAR BASIS WHERE THOSE WHO COME FROM A LESS ADVANTAGES SOCIAL ECONOMIC BACK ROUND BINGE DRINK MORE OFTEN.
ELEMENTS OF SOCIETY CONTRIBUTING TO ALCOHOL ABUSE Family History: Studies have shown that alcoholism can be hereditary. Also, if a parent or close relative such as a sibling abuses alcohol its more likely that another person in that family will abuse alcohol as well. Trauma & Stress : A person may look to self medicate by abusing alcohol for a traumatic event in their life. Alcohol is cheap and easy to get making it a go to solution for work stress and traumatic experiences. There is a lot less stress and planning to obtaining alcohol than scheduling an appointment with a mental health professional to deal with your problems
