07.18.19 Learning Learning : A change in behavior, resulting from experience o Learning is central to almost all areas of human existence Behaviorism : A formal learning theory from the early twentieth century o John Watson : focuses on environment and associated effects as a key determinant of learning The infant is a tabula rasa (Latin for “blank slate” o B.F Skinner : designed animal experiments to discover basic rules of learning We learn from Experience Critical for survival by adapting behaviors for a particular environment o Which sounds indicate potential danger? o What foods are dangerous? o When is it safe to sleep? We learn in Three Ways 1.Non-associative leaning 2.Associative learning 3.Learning by watching others Non-associative learning -a person learning information about one external stimulus (e.g., sight, smell, or sound) Habituation : a decrease in behavioral response after lengthy or repeated exposure to a stimulus Especially if the stimulus is neither harmful nor rewarding
