An important aspect of every society is creating kinship ties, and the most common way to do so is through marriage. Social unions, where interpersonal relationships are acknowledged by the greater society, have been around for centuries. This is due to the advantages that one gains through marriage, whether it is legal, social, emotional, economical, spiritual, or religious. The reasons for entering into marriage vary widely between and within different societies, and can be due in part into how the marriage is formed, such as if it is arranged by parents or chosen out of love. Arranged marriages are often held to be in violation of human rights and mostly detrimental for the woman being married. However, by looking at the different societies of the Ju/’hoansi, Trobrianders, and people of Golpalpur, one can see that the disadvantages of an arranged marriage have more to do with the culture’s lineage than the arranged marriage itself. In the cases of the Ju/’hoansi and Trobrianders, who have matrilineal societies, the woman are far better off
