Am. Gov. 15:05 8/25 Americans invent the first modern republic 1. Background: 1750s- 13 British colonies along Eastern Seaboard Each colony is individual and respond to directly to London 2. Big power rivalry in North America: Britain vs. France French have military strongholds north of Canada France is trying to move south from Canada and Britain is trying to move  North British colonies start making land claims to the west past Appalaichians Gerorge Washington of Virginia gains experience in French Indian Wars 3. 1760s British defeat French in Canada French withdraw from Canada, remain in areas like Louisiana Afterwards, London didn’t want to front all military costs for colonies London starts taxing colonies for military fees, colonies get upset about  taxation without representation Boston Tea party Colonies were not permitted to get west past Appalachians because of  treaties made by London Conflicts cause colonies to unite against London Continental Congress established 4. Jefferson’s Declaration of Independence
