Vanessa Donabel Casicas, Naihma Mae Creayla, Krizza Marie CHAPTER 1 The Problem This chapter briefly introduces and states the problem, as well as the theoretical and conceptual framework. It also discusses about objectives of this study, the variables used, and the hypothesis. The Scope and Limitations, scope of the study, definition of terms will also be stated. Introduction Since the College of Nursing in Xavier University reopened in 2002, it has adhered to the curriculum changes imposed by the Department of Education (DECS), and presently the Commission on Higher Education (CHED). This includes the latest undertakings of the CHED which is the Associate in Health Education (AHSE) curriculum in levels I and II. Started in 1998 as a response to the poor demand for Filipino health workers globally, a preparatory course, the AHSE leads up to another two year program, the completion of which earns for the student a degree of Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Upon completion of the two year preparatory course, graduates are well appointed with the appropriate competencies to function as a primary health care provider. It has periodically modified the content of its courses, in response to rapid changes, but always within limits allowed by law. It has always designed its program to be flexible and compatible with the requirements of other programs as a result of which its 2 graduates are given the greater option to pursue higher learning and to increase their marketability in the global job market. Recently the College of Nursing in Xavier University has changed its preparatory course form AHSE levels I and II to BSN levels I and II. The students would complete the program in four years. The latest curriculum would include new subjects that would further enhance their skills, knowledge and attitude regarding health care. Academic performance in Nursing is the percent of eligible nursing students scoring at the satisfactory or excellent level on curriculum-based assessments in 3 content areas: skill, knowledge, and attitude. It is a deposition of response to favorably or unfavorably towards the nursing subject. In this study, the performance of selected BSN I (2008-2009) and AHSE II (2007-2008) students is measured and compared by the researchers. The performance of students depends largely on the influence of the learning stressors on the students such as personal life related situations, academic situations, and the current curriculum they belong to....
