Unformatted text preview: Cold Mountain, written by Charles Frazier, takes place in Virginia near the end of the Civil War. The story opens with Inman, the male protagonist, lying in a hospital recovering from war wounds. After a series of events, Inman escapes the hospital to reunite with Ada, the female protagonist. The story of Inmans adventures intertwines with Adas story. After her fathers death, Ada is left alone to manage the farm; a local girl named Ruby comes and helps Ada. Ada and Ruby form a friendship. While Inman is traveling westward he encounters many obstacles. He is pursued across Cape Fear River. He encounters a preacher, Solomon Veasey, attempting to kill his pregnant lover. Inman is forced to continue part of his journey with Veasey. Later on Inman and Veasey help a man, Junior, remove his dead bull from the stream. Inman is drugged and is forced into marriage with Juniors wife. Junior then turns in Veasey and Inman, forcing Inman to travel back east. The guards decide to shoot both men and bury them. Inman manages Inman to travel back east....
