ASAN 310: Study Guide General Terms; 1. Anglophone Literature: Literature written in English; but the term is used in this context to refer to literature written outside of Great Britain and America. 2. Colonization: The act or process of establishing a colony or colonies within a foreign land. 3. De-colonization: To release from the status of colony; to allow a colony to become independent. 4. Gender: Refers to the socially constructed roles, behaviors, activities, and attributes that a given society considers appropriate for men and women. 5. Lyric Poetry: A form of poetry with rhyming schemes that express personal feelings. 6. Aesthetic and the senses: A branch of philosophy dealing with the nature of beauty, art, and taste, and with the creation and appreciation of beauty. 7. Religiosity: Exaggerated or affected piety and religious zeal. 8. Use of irony: A literary style employing such contrasts for humorous or rhetorical effect. 9. Challenges of modernity: The harshness of modernization and the loss of traditional Asian culture. 10. Role Reversals: The idea of the women becoming the breadwinner/provider rather than the man. They make more money and make up the labor market. 11. Reading poetry aloud: Understand the text better. Recognition of the rhyme scheme and connotations. Recognition of author’s voice. 12. Literary Analysis: The study, evaluation, and interpretation of literature. 1. Concepts of physical beauty: The traditional clothing and beautiful, fair skin. 2. Clothing as group identification: Piercings, tattoos, footwear, headgear, and jewelry are markings of identity. Example: In Malaysia, 3 generations of women wear traditional clothing. Family is an identifier in maintaining appearance. 3.
