We are living in the information age. In order to take good decision we need to be informed, information that is obtained by processing many data or facts. Initially, the computer file system was used to store the data. However, we will see that the file system has significant disadvantages. To help the management of the data, special structures were introduced, named DATABASES. We will study few elements of the file system in order to better understand the role and advantages of a database. 1

Data is composed by raw facts, facts that have not yet been processed to indicate a meaning. For example, if you want to do a survey to understand the satisfaction of the users of a computer lab, you will create a web form to ask questions. As the users answer the questions, raw data is captures, and these can be stored in a table, keeping for each user what the user answered to each of the questions. 2

It is important to remark that the information obtained through processing raw data requires a context to reveal the meaning of the data. From the same raw data various information can be extracted. 3 In the current information age, there is too much information, also known as information overload. Therefore, to take good decision we need to have selective, accurate, relevant and timely information. In other words to have the necessary knowledge to take the decision. Another difference between these terms is related to their goal.
